Recently, Renesas Electronics has introduced a new LED driver control IC "R2A20135SP" for LED lighting fixtures, which integrates the conduction angle information of the triac TRIAC (phase) dimmer. It can be fed back to the conduction angle detection circuit of the output voltage and can reduce the package area by 40%.
Renesas Electronics said, "Compared with Renesas original product 'R2A20134', which requires an external conduction angle detection circuit, the new product can reduce the package area on the printed circuit board by about 40%." The new product is an LED driver control IC using a step-down DC-DC converter. The switching elements are not integrated and therefore require an external device. LED supply current error is only 6%, and the company's original product is 15%. By reducing the feedback control voltage of the DC-DC converter from +0.6V of the original product to +0.2V, the current error is reduced by approximately 60%. In addition, a power factor correction (PFC) function, an overcurrent limit function, and a zero current detection function are built in. The maximum supply voltage is +24V and is available in an 8-terminal SOP package with a working junction temperature range of -40 to +150 °C.
In addition, Renesas has also prepared the LED control circuit evaluation board "R2A20135EVB-ND1" equipped with this listed IC. The board area is 33.5mm×3.6mm, supporting “E26†type LED bulb , AC input voltage is 90～132V, output voltage is +40V, output current is 200mA, dimming range (tail edge dimming rate) is 4～ 100%, conversion efficiency is about 85%, power factor is about 0.9, and total harmonic distortion (THD) is about 20%.
It is understood that the IC will be sampled from March 2012, and the sample price is 40 yen each. Mass production is scheduled to start in June 2012, and it is planned to increase the mass production scale to 5 million monthly production after December 2012.
