High-end equipment has become a key weapon in the strategic competition among major global powers.
As a core component of industrial development, equipment manufacturing serves as the cornerstone of economic growth, especially for industrialized nations. Establishing a powerful and advanced equipment manufacturing industry is not only essential for realizing the vision of “Made in China 2025,†but also critical for enhancing China's overall national strength and building a true manufacturing powerhouse. Since the 18th National Congress, China has prioritized innovation as a driving force, implementing strategies to build a strong nation, and actively promoting high-end equipment manufacturing to go global. Through continuous effort and progress, significant breakthroughs have been made in key sectors of China's economy, with several products featuring cutting-edge technologies reaching international standards. Some have even reached or approached the level of global leaders.
China has successfully developed a range of advanced power transmission and transformation equipment, including full-scale UHV AC and DC systems, mastering the entire set of UHV transmission technology and achieving “Made in China†and “Created in China.†This has placed China at the forefront of international high-voltage transmission technology. The ±1100 kV UHV DC transmission project between Zhundong and Wannan, launched in January 2016, stands as the world’s highest voltage, largest capacity, longest-distance, and most technologically advanced project. Additionally, the development of one-million-ton ethylene equipment has positioned China as the fourth country—after Japan, the U.S., and Germany—to master the “three machines†required for ethylene production, ending its reliance on imports and marking a milestone in China’s advanced manufacturing history.
Machine tools, often referred to as the "mother machine" of manufacturing, play a vital role in the development of other equipment. In recent years, China has made remarkable progress in high-end CNC machine tools, with key technologies and products reaching international standards. These tools have supported major national projects such as nuclear power, large aircraft, and aerospace, ensuring national security. For example, the 25m vertical column turning and milling lathe is among the world’s best, while heavy equipment like 80,000-ton forging presses and 10,000-ton aluminum plate tension drawing machines have filled critical domestic gaps. The 1500 mm aspheric ultra-precision grinding machine has broken foreign technology blockades, and in the automotive sector, large panel stamping equipment has reached global standards, even being exported to Ford in the U.S.
The evolution of equipment manufacturing is not just about improving technical capabilities—it also involves transforming thinking and methods. The rise of 3D printing has revolutionized traditional manufacturing by replacing cutting and molding processes, offering new possibilities. This technology has been widely applied in aerospace, medical, and biotechnology fields. For instance, the main windshield frame of China’s C919 aircraft was 3D-printed, showcasing the potential of this innovation.
The integration of information technology and manufacturing is central to “Made in China 2025.†Digitalization, networking, and intelligence are shaping the future of the industry. Smart manufacturing, as a key carrier of this strategy, combines emerging technologies like artificial intelligence, big data, and cloud computing to drive the next phase of development.
