SKF Bearing Installation and Maintenance Knowledge

First, the requirements for the installation surface and environment

Before installing SKF bearings, it is crucial to ensure that both the mounting surface and the surrounding area are clean. Any foreign materials such as metal shavings, burrs, or dust can lead to noise, vibration, or even damage to the raceways and rolling elements. Therefore, always inspect and clean the installation site thoroughly before proceeding with the installation.

Second, cleaning SKF bearings before installation

The surface of SKF bearings is often coated with anti-rust oil. Before installation, this should be carefully removed using clean gasoline or kerosene, followed by applying a suitable high-quality grease. The cleanliness of the bearing has a significant impact on its lifespan and noise performance. However, sealed SKF bearings do not need to be cleaned or re-greased unless specified by the manufacturer.

Third, choosing the appropriate radial clearance

Not all SKF bearings require minimal working clearance. The choice of clearance depends on operating conditions. According to GB 4604-93, radial clearance is divided into five groups: -2, 0, 3, 4, and 5, with group 0 being the standard clearance. For general applications, group 0 is usually sufficient. However, for special conditions such as high temperature, high speed, or precision applications like machine tool spindles, larger clearances may be necessary. Roller bearings typically benefit from a small amount of working clearance.

Fourth, installation and disassembly of SKF bearings

When installing SKF bearings, avoid directly hammering the bearing face or non-load-bearing surfaces. Instead, use a pressure block, sleeve, or specialized tools to apply even force. Never transmit force through the rolling elements. If the mounting surface is lubricated, the process will be smoother. In cases of heavy interference, heating the bearing in mineral oil to around 80–90°C can make installation easier. Ensure the oil temperature does not exceed 100°C to prevent damage to the bearing’s hardness. When disassembling, using a removal tool and pouring hot oil onto the inner ring can help expand it and ease removal.

Fifth, lubricating SKF bearings with grease

A common misconception is that more grease means better performance. However, over-greasing can cause excessive churning, leading to high temperatures and reduced efficiency. It is recommended to fill the bearing with enough grease to occupy 1/2 to 1/3 of the internal space. At high speeds, this should be reduced to about 1/3 to prevent overheating.

Sixth, selecting the right type of SKF bearing grease

Choosing the correct grease is vital for the performance and longevity of SKF bearings. Grease consists of base oil, thickener, and additives, and each component plays a key role in determining its properties. Low-viscosity oils are ideal for low-temperature and high-speed applications, while high-viscosity oils are better suited for high-temperature and heavy-load environments. Thickeners affect the grease’s water resistance and lubrication ability. Mixing different brands or types of grease is generally not recommended, as it can lead to poor performance and potential damage to the bearing.
