Who is the Apple 5G baseband chip? Four manufacturers may have hope
At the MWC2018 conference, 5G was one of the most talked-about topics. Both domestic and international mobile network operators announced their plans to finalize 5G infrastructure within the next two years. With this rapid development, the question arises: which 5G baseband chip will Apple choose for its future iPhones?
Recently, foreign media outlet VentureBeat reported that Apple may opt for 5G baseband chips from one of four major manufacturers. These include Qualcomm, Samsung, Intel, and potentially even Apple itself.
Qualcomm has long been a leader in baseband technology, with a strong track record of performance and innovation. Its Snapdragon X50 modem is already being adopted by 19 manufacturers and 18 operators for 5G devices launching in 2019. However, Apple’s ongoing legal battle with Qualcomm could change things. If the dispute continues, Apple might look elsewhere for its 5G components.
Samsung, on the other hand, has made significant strides in baseband technology. The recently released Galaxy S9 features the Exynos 9810, which supports full network compatibility. Samsung has also outlined clear plans for 5G devices, making it a strong candidate for supplying Apple with 5G chips in the future.
Apple has used Intel’s baseband chips since the iPhone 7. Intel has also unveiled the specs for its XMM8000 series 5G modem. If this chip meets Apple’s performance standards, it's possible that Apple will continue using Intel’s solution for its 5G iPhones.
Another possibility is that Apple might develop its own 5G modem. This isn’t out of the question, given that Apple has already integrated W-series wireless chips into products like the Apple Watch, AirPods, and Beats headphones. If Apple can build a reliable and high-performance 5G modem, it may eventually transition to an in-house solution.
According to foreign analysts, Apple is likely to start with Qualcomm, Samsung, or Intel for its first 5G iPhone. Once its own modem reaches a level of performance and compatibility that matches or exceeds these options, Apple may make the switch. This approach would allow the company to maintain stability while gradually building its own 5G capabilities.
