Harvard academician approved the United States to encrypt the manufacturer to open a government-specific back door is not feasible

Harvard academician Bruce Schneier conducted a comprehensive survey of 865 encryption-related products available in the U.S. market, revealing that over half—specifically 546 items—were sourced from 54 countries outside the United States. This highlights the global nature of the encryption industry, where U.S. companies are not the sole providers of secure technologies. The study, led by Schneier and other security experts at the Berkman Center for Internet and Technology, analyzed a wide range of hardware and software solutions that incorporate encryption features. It found that more than two-thirds of these products came from international suppliers, emphasizing how deeply integrated the global encryption market has become. Schneier pointed out that it is unrealistic for the U.S. government to expect all encryption products to include backdoors for surveillance. Given the international origins of most encryption tools, enforcing such a policy would put American-made security solutions at a disadvantage in the global market. Moreover, the report noted that many manufacturers operate across jurisdictions, often storing source code in multiple locations or offering encrypted services through servers in different regions. This allows them to adapt to varying regulatory environments and maintain flexibility in compliance. In a blunt statement, Schneier criticized the idea that backdoors would make investigations easier. He argued that criminals using products with built-in backdoors would likely be either naive or unwilling to switch to more secure alternatives. “It’s not practical to assume that only the ‘stupid’ or ‘lazy’ will use such products,” he said, highlighting the flawed logic behind the push for encryption backdoors.
