Medical 3D printing has been inserted into the wings of "precision medicine" and "Chinese wisdom"

In recent years, the integration of 3D printing technology into the medical field has brought revolutionary changes, especially in complex surgeries like heart operations. According to Dr. Liu Jinting, a senior cardiothoracic surgeon at Shanghai Children’s Medical Center, the use of 3D printing allows doctors to simulate surgical procedures beforehand, cutting down operation time by at least half. This is particularly vital for children, whose delicate bodies can’t withstand prolonged surgeries, thereby significantly improving the success rate. As part of the broader "precision medicine" movement, 3D printing applications have evolved beyond basic bone and limb models. Now, it's being used to create detailed models of complex organs such as the heart and blood vessels, bringing what was once a futuristic concept into real-world clinical practice. The technology is not only transforming surgery but also entering the realm of medical aesthetics. Recently, Shanghai Children’s Medical Center announced a collaboration with Materialise, a leading global 3D printing software company, to establish the first "Pediatric 3D Digital Medical Research Center." This initiative aims to combine 3D digital modeling with physical printing to produce accurate pathological models, support medical education, and develop comprehensive databases of anatomical samples. Before surgery, cardiologists can use these 3D-printed heart models to explain the procedure and potential risks to patients. These models are exact replicas of the patient’s heart, allowing doctors to study its structure in detail and even simulate blood flow patterns. This helps them plan the most effective surgical approach, ensuring better outcomes for children with complex congenital heart conditions. However, despite its promising potential, the application of 3D printing in hospitals remains in an early, often unprofitable phase. Dr. Liu explained that no official clinical approvals have been granted yet, so they are currently applying for necessary permissions and offering services on a case-by-case basis. KimFrancois, general manager of Materialise China, noted that the Chinese market has seen growing interest in medical 3D printing since 2005. Many companies, both local and international, are now focusing on this niche. He emphasized that while 3D printing in healthcare is more complex than in other industries—due to the need for biocompatible materials and precise mechanical properties—progress is being made. Currently, domestic 3D printing technology for dental and orthopedic applications is well-established and widely adopted in major hospitals. However, research into 3D-printed cells, soft tissues, and even full organs is still ongoing. In terms of market applications, there are two main categories: external devices like prosthetics and medical models, and implantable devices such as bones and joints, though the latter remains less common. In the Chinese capital market, medical 3D printing has become a key player under the banners of "precision medicine" and "Made in China." According to Deloitte, the medical sector accounts for about 15% of the 3D printing industry, ranking among the top three segments. Earlier in 2015, Guangyun Da (300227.SZ) partnered with Shanghai Jiaotong University to form Shanghai Guangyunda Medical Digital Co., officially entering the medical 3D printing space. According to KimFrancois, the company's current revenue comes mainly from collaborations with hospitals and research projects. Clinical implementation is the next big step, and large-scale profitability may take some time until regulatory approvals are fully in place.
