In the latest report from Japan's Industrial News, published on the 12th, it was revealed that Sharp, currently undergoing operational restructuring, has received support from Hon Hai (Foxconn), significantly increasing the chances of its recovery. Hon Hai is aiming to collaborate with Sharp in order to secure Apple's upcoming OLED panel orders for the 2018 iPhone models.
According to the report, Hon Hai plans to utilize the idle facilities and existing equipment at the Kuchayama factory to develop mass production technology for OLED panels. The company intends to begin small-scale production by mid-2017. In addition to the Kameyama plant, Sharp's smaller panel manufacturing sites, which were closed in 2015, may also be reactivated for OLED panel production. Furthermore, the joint 10th-generation panel factory operated by Hon Hai and Sharp is considering large-scale production of OLED panels for television screens.
Asahi Shimbun also reported on the 13th that details of Hon Hai’s global strategy following its acquisition of Sharp have been disclosed. In addition to leveraging Sharp’s display technology to capture Apple’s 2018 OLED panel orders for iPhones, Hon Hai is also exploring new sales channels through Alibaba Group, a leading e-commerce company in China.
According to sources cited by Asahi Shimbun, Hon Hai has made internal adjustments. It now plans to start mass production of OLED panels in 2018 for supply to Apple. Initially, Hon Hai had intended to invest heavily in separate OLED panel production, but it has since shifted its focus to using these funds for Sharp’s acquisition and growth. The company plans to invest 50 billion yen in the initial production line, with further investments reaching hundreds of billions of yen in the future.
While Sharp is currently engaged in R&D for basic OLED panel technologies, it lacks the capital for large-scale investment. On the other hand, Hon Hai possesses the financial resources but faces technical challenges. This collaboration is expected to create a complementary relationship between the two companies, combining Sharp’s expertise with Hon Hai’s financial strength to advance the development and production of OLED panels.
