Toyota tries to extend fuel cell technology to heavy-duty trucks for more than 200 miles

So far, the Toyota Class 8 concept truck has already completed over 4,000 miles of cargo transportation. Starting October 23, it will embark on a new mission, covering nearly 200 miles daily. Toyota is continuously expanding the range of its fuel cell trucks as part of ongoing feasibility studies, aiming to prove the practicality of this green technology in real-world logistics operations.

The ProjectPortal truck features a 12-kilowatt battery paired with a fuel cell system derived from the Mirai model. It delivers 670 horsepower and 1,325 pound-feet of peak torque, with a range exceeding 200 miles. The vehicle is designed to carry up to 80,000 pounds, making it suitable for heavy freight. Most importantly, its only emission is water vapor, highlighting its environmental benefits.

With heavy trucks being a major source of pollution near the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach, Toyota is pushing forward with its vision of zero-emission transportation. Other companies are also investing heavily in electric truck technology. For example, Cummins has introduced semi-autonomous electric trucks, while Tesla is set to launch its own version next month. This growing trend shows that the future of freight transportation is heading toward cleaner, more sustainable solutions.
