According to a recent report from the American Automobile Magazine, Toyota has taken another step in its commitment to hydrogen fuel cell technology by introducing it into the heavy truck industry. Following the success of the Mirai, the company has been testing the feasibility of using this clean energy source for long-haul transportation. To do so, Toyota deployed its Project Portal fuel cell trucks at the warehouses of the Los Angeles and Long Beach ports, where they are used to move cargo efficiently and sustainably. The Toyota Class 8 concept truck has already traveled over 4,000 miles as part of its initial testing phase. Starting October 23, the vehicle will embark on a new mission, covering nearly 200 miles each day. As the project continues, Toyota plans to increase the distance the fuel cell trucks can travel, further proving their reliability and efficiency in real-world conditions. The Project Portal truck is equipped with a compact 12-kilowatt battery and a fuel cell system derived from the Mirai. It delivers 670 horsepower and 1,325 pound-feet of torque, with a range exceeding 200 miles on a single tank. Toyota aims for the truck to carry up to 80,000 pounds, making it a viable alternative for commercial freight. Most impressively, the only emission produced is water vapor, highlighting the environmental benefits of this technology. Heavy trucks have long been a major source of pollution in the areas surrounding the Los Angeles and Long Beach ports. Recognizing this issue, Toyota is striving to develop a zero-emission solution that can help reduce the environmental impact of the logistics sector. In addition to Toyota, other companies are also investing heavily in electric truck technology. For instance, Cummins has introduced semi-autonomous electric trucks, while Tesla is set to launch its own version next month, signaling a growing shift toward cleaner and more sustainable transportation options.
