Amazon UAV new patent: self-disintegration in case of failure

Amazon has long been a pioneer in the drone technology field. The company has developed various innovations to improve the safety and efficiency of drone deliveries. For instance, Amazon has introduced drone parachutes that allow for safe landings, as well as charging systems that can connect to street lamps or charging poles when power is low. Additionally, the company has explored the use of drone swarms, where individual drones can be released from a cluster upon command.

While much of Amazon's focus has been on ensuring successful delivery, a recent patent filed by the company may change the game entirely. The patent, titled "Directed Fragmentation for Unmanned Airborne Vehicles," reveals a new concept: drones that can disintegrate mid-air. This technology aims to reduce damage on the ground by breaking apart the drone into smaller pieces if it falls.

According to the patent details, the fragmentation process is highly sophisticated. If a drone crashes during flight, it can break down its components to minimize the risk of damage to people or property below. However, not all parts are destroyed at once. Amazon's drones are equipped with a "split controller" that determines the optimal sequence for disassembling different components based on factors like flight path, environmental conditions, and terrain information.

The split controller can adjust the disintegration plan depending on internal or external conditions. These include weather elements such as wind, rain, lightning, and pressure changes. The drone then selects the safest way to disperse its parts based on the situation. Currently, the technology is advanced enough to identify failure causes and safely disassemble parts at the right time.

Amazon has consistently led in drone-related patents, with some ideas being highly practical and others more speculative. Regardless of their current feasibility, these innovations position Amazon as a strong contender in the global drone industry. By exploring radical solutions like self-disintegrating drones, the company continues to push the boundaries of what’s possible in aerial delivery technology.
