Data shows that more than 85% of smartphone users in the world experience a drop in mobile phones every year, and the rate of fragmentation after a drop is quite high. In order to solve this pain point, the fifth-generation Gorilla Glass increased the safe drop height performance from 1 meter to 1.6 meters. Within 1.6 meters, the intactness of the new glass cover dropped to 80%.

The fifth-generation gorilla glass uses a new material with ion exchange technology, which improves scratch resistance by a factor of two and is about four times higher than other competing products (soda-lime glass). However, due to the increase in resistance to falling and abrasion, Corning had to compromise on the thickness. The thickness of the glass was 0.6mm, thicker than the 0.4mm of the fourth generation. At the same time, the fifth generation retained the melting and other technologies, and the fusion and compression of raw materials were somewhat different from those of the fourth generation. It is understood that the fifth-generation gorilla glass is still studying anti-fingerprint technology, they try to find a special layer or element to achieve the purpose of anti-fingerprint.

Currently, several manufacturers have conducted evaluation tests on the fifth-generation gorilla glass. According to Corning official, the fifth-generation gorilla glass will first be applied to high-end mobile phones and is expected to appear in various brands in the world in the third quarter. On the end product, the first model is likely to be Samsung Note 7, which will be released on August 2.
