After months of planning and brainstorming, we finally finalized the overall vision for this home renovation project. The integration of high-tech smart home equipment with a simple yet durable foundation felt incredibly innovative and forward-thinking. It wasn't just about convenience; it was about creating a space that truly enhanced our daily lives.
One of the standout features of our home is the use of IKEA furniture. These pieces are not only affordable and easy to assemble, but they also allow for flexibility down the line. As our needs change, upgrading or replacing items becomes straightforward. Additionally, the ability to customize and DIY adds a personal touch to the entire setup. Combined with a suite of Xiaomi smart devices and the Mi Home app, the possibilities for a truly interactive home experience are endless.
When you walk through the door, you're greeted by a striking wine-red wall that instantly brightens the space. The IKEA dining table and chairs were surprisingly easy to put together, making the process enjoyable rather than stressful. The entryway is compact, so there's no need for a separate entryway light. Instead, we opted for a clever solution: the smart light bulb paired with a Xiaomi door/window sensor. Through the Mi Home app, we programmed the lights to turn on automatically from 6 PM to 6 AM whenever the door is opened. This feature provides both functionality and peace of mind.
To further enhance the smart home experience, we incorporated a Xiaomi universal remote control. Placed conveniently on the coffee table, it consolidates all our appliance controls into one device. It can even be linked with the door/window sensors to automate tasks like turning on the living room air conditioner when the door opens in the summer. The Xiaomi multi-functional gateway serves as the central hub, connecting all smart devices for seamless operation.
We also added a Xiaomi wireless switch, which functions as a doorbell when placed outside the front door. If the universal remote isn’t nearby, pressing this switch can activate the air conditioner, thanks to its connection with the gateway. Another useful gadget is the Xiaomi motion sensor, which sits on the TV cabinet. It’s programmed to shut off the air conditioner after 10 minutes of inactivity during the day. At night, it can notify the gateway to turn on the lights when movement is detected.
For the air conditioning system, we decided on a ducted air conditioning unit for the living room. Although central air conditioning might seem appealing, it proved to be significantly more expensive. A ducted air conditioning system with individual units for each room ended up being more cost-effective, saving us around $1,500. The fresh air system is another essential component, though it does produce some noise, especially noticeable at night. While applying a soundproofing material might help, the trade-off for cleaner air is worth it.
In the master bedroom, we stuck with IKEA for the bed, bedside table, and wardrobe. Putting these pieces together took patience and teamwork, but the end result was well worth the effort. The wardrobe was particularly challenging due to its size and weight. We also installed a Xiaomi temperature sensor to ensure comfortable sleeping conditions. If the temperature exceeds 28°C, the air conditioner turns on. Below 26°C, it switches to ventilation mode.
The kitchen setup includes various Xiaomi smart appliances, including a water purifier, electric kettle, rice cooker, and smoke alarm. The rice cooker can be linked with other smart devices to notify you when your meal is ready. The smoke alarm, mounted on the ceiling, provides instant alerts via the gateway and mobile app in case of danger. A Xiaomi flooding sensor, recently crowdfunded, is planned for the kitchen. It works similarly to the smoke alarm, alerting you to leaks.
The bathroom features a tall mirror cabinet in the dry area with ample storage. However, we realized it would be safer to divide the large mirror into two separate doors. In the wet area, the electric water heater’s pipes are located above the toilet but remain unused. Our initial plan was to prioritize gas water heaters over electric ones, using the latter as a backup. However, given the current performance of the gas heater, we’ve postponed installing the electric one until winter if needed.
Overall, this renovation project has transformed our home into a modern, tech-savvy haven. Each smart device adds a layer of convenience and security, making everyday life easier and more enjoyable.
