Tesla speaks fully automated within two years, is this credible?

Tesla, one of the world’s leading manufacturers in autonomous vehicles, holds significant influence in the global automotive industry. The company has recently claimed that fully autonomous cars will be available within two years. But can Tesla actually deliver on this promise? It's a question many are asking as the tech world watches closely. Elon Musk is known for his bold ideas and relentless drive to bring them to life. His mindset—“one heart and one mind”—reflects his determination to push boundaries. However, working with him can sometimes be challenging, as his vision may shift or evolve over time. Earlier this year, Musk made a public commitment that Tesla’s self-driving cars would be fully automated within two years. Soon after, Chris Lattner, a former top engineer from Apple who had been leading Tesla’s autonomous driving program since 2016, announced his departure. In his exit statement, Lattner said, “In the end, Elon and I always thought we couldn’t work together, so I chose to leave.” He also mentioned that the autopilot team was going through a tense transition period. To support its self-driving ambitions, Tesla began equipping all vehicles with Hardware 2 in October of last year. This system includes radar, cameras, and ultrasonic sensors, aiming to provide the necessary hardware for full autonomy. Musk had promised that vehicles with HW 2 would have the same autopilot capabilities as those with the older Hardware 1 by the end of 2016—but the timeline stretched longer than expected. The Model S, for example, faced criticism from Consumer Reports when its emergency forward braking system wasn’t fully functional. Only after improvements did Tesla meet its initial goals. Now, the company is taking another step forward by developing its own proprietary computer chip tailored specifically for autonomous driving. While Tesla currently uses NVIDIA’s supercomputers, it’s moving toward internal development to gain more control over performance, cost, and timing. According to recent reports, Tesla is collaborating with AMD to design new chips. Although AMD CEO Sanjay Jha hasn’t confirmed details, there are clear signs that the partnership is real. Jim Keller, a former AMD executive, has joined Tesla to lead some of the autonomous driving efforts. Additionally, Tesla has hired several key AMD engineers, indicating a deeper collaboration. Musk previously set an ambitious goal: a Model S would travel from Los Angeles to New York without human intervention by the end of 2017. That meant the Autopilot team would have little time for personal life. Meanwhile, Tesla has released a new version of its hardware suite called Hardware 2.5, which contradicts Musk’s earlier claims that HW 2 would include all necessary sensors for full autonomy. A Tesla spokesperson clarified that HW 2.5 is essentially HW 2.1, with minor improvements in reliability and computing power but no new GPUs. They also stated that if the updated configuration proves successful, owners of HW 2 vehicles could get free upgrades. This reflects Tesla’s strategy of continuously improving existing models rather than waiting for new releases. Despite the challenges, Musk continues to set high expectations for his customers. While this approach may seem risky, it has worked before. Those who believe in him often receive cutting-edge technology and innovative designs. With such ambitious plans, building factories across the country seems less urgent than becoming the first to achieve true autonomy. After all, everyone remembers the first person to walk on the moon—but few remember the second. Elon Musk knows this well, and he’s determined to be the one who makes history.
