In today’s critical phase of OLED screen development, LCDs are increasingly associated with the low-end market. Even with the emergence of the 88-inch 8K OLED TV panel, 8K is set to become the true standard for ultra-high definition. While LCDs will still have a place in the market, the high-end segment is clearly dominated by OLED technology.
On January 1, 2018, LG Display, the world’s largest panel manufacturer, officially announced that it had successfully developed an 88-inch 8K OLED TV panel. This marked the launch of the first-ever 8K OLED panel, signaling a major shift toward the true 8K ultra-HD era in the television display industry. The initial batch of these panels was destined for companies like LG Electronics, Sony, and Panasonic, making their market positioning clear and strategic.

LG Display officially unveiled the largest 88-inch 8K OLED panel ever created. In 2017, the development of OLED TVs was nothing short of impressive, sweeping through the global high-end TV market with its superior image quality and innovative design. High-end users quickly recognized the advantages of OLED, which offered a revolutionary viewing experience. As a result, older LCD technology struggled to keep up with evolving consumer demands. For LCDs, 8K may be the only card they can play, but OLED has already taken the lead in the high-end market.
Despite this, the entire industry is pushing forward with 8K, and the 8K TV era is expected to arrive faster than many anticipated. As the only self-illuminating large-screen display technology, OLED surpasses LCD in every aspect and stands as a symbol of cutting-edge high-end technology.
There is no doubt that LCD technology has reached its limits. 8K resolution is not exclusive to LCDs, and other self-luminous technologies such as QLED and Micro LED are also advancing rapidly. While LCDs remain cost-effective and have a long lifespan, they are gradually losing their association with "high-end" status. The ultra-high resolution of 8K is truly remarkable. As early as April 2017, reporters and LG Display’s Li Tinghan already knew that the 88-inch 8K OLED panel was ready, though it hadn’t been publicly shown yet. Soon after, BOE announced that its 10.5-generation line would soon mass-produce 65-inch and 75-inch 8K LCD panels. On the first day of the new year, LG Display responded—8K OLED was already prepared.
OLEDs, whether 77-inch 4K or 88-inch 8K, maintain the same ultra-thin features. In contrast, 8K LCD TVs use a direct-lit backlight design, significantly increasing the thickness of the unit. Compared to the sleek, paper-thin OLED TVs, they appear bulky and outdated. This makes OLED more suitable for modern home environments.
Li Tinghan from LG Display mentioned privately that the size and resolution of OLED displays are no longer issues. What matters is cultivating the market. Based on global consumer needs, LG Display will continue to develop new panel specifications to serve high-end users worldwide.
In fact, in the mobile phone sector, LCD screens are already seen as low-end. High-end smartphones like the iPhone X, Huawei, OPPO, and VIVO use OLED screens to offer better style and visual appeal. The mobile market leads the way, and the TV big screen market is following closely. Over time, LCD TVs will gradually be pushed down to the low-end until they are eventually phased out.

Returning to the OLED camp, Sony has taken control of the high-end TV market. Throughout the years, the market has repeatedly warned consumers that 8K is the real standard for ultra-high definition, while 4K is merely a format of UHD. The future belongs to 8K, and although LCDs will still have a place, the high-end market is clearly reserved for OLED. This is the true “8K horizon†that consumers should be aiming for.
