The British style is quite versatile, encompassing everything from fashion design to interior decoration. Many of the most iconic figures in British culture are also linked to the automotive industry, particularly the Jaguar brand, which embodies the extraordinary heritage of British engineering. The way they understand and pursue speed is truly something worth learning.
Take the 2018 Jaguar F-PACE, for example. Known for its sleek design and powerful performance, it’s a vehicle that perfectly captures the essence of Jaguar’s genes. While it may look stunning, it does have its limitations, especially in terms of ride comfort.
Last year, I had the chance to test drive the 2016 Jaguar F-PACE 3.0 SC four-wheel-drive S high-performance version. What struck me most was its mesmerizing exhaust note and incredible handling. It’s an SUV that commands attention and control.
Recently, I got to experience the 2018 version of the F-PACE, which comes equipped with Jaguar’s new Ingenium engine. This 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine is a significant improvement over the previous Ford engines, which were still used in more than half a million cars.
Is 2.0 liters enough? You bet. Thanks to some cutting-edge technologies, this engine is far more powerful than its predecessor. It produces an additional 9 horsepower and 25 N·m of torque, with the peak torque now available at just 1300 rpm. This means it’s ready to deliver power whenever you step on the gas.
During our urban road test, which included mountain roads, national highways, and even stretches of highway, the F-PACE performed admirably. Within legal speed limits, there’s no doubt that this 2.0-liter turbocharged engine can handle any situation. However, the real challenge lies in controlling such a powerful vehicle.
Driving the F-PACE on winding mountain roads was exhilarating. By switching the driving mode to dynamic and shifting into S mode, the car transforms into a wild beast. In this mode, the engine runs at higher revs for extended periods, providing immediate acceleration and a robust power delivery. Once the engine hits 5000 rpm, the sound and exhaust notes give it a feel similar to a larger V6 engine.
The extensive use of aluminum front suspension and rear H-shaped multi-link systems helps reduce weight while maintaining excellent handling. The adaptive damping system adjusts the shock absorbers up to 500 times per second based on tire steering and body dynamics, ensuring optimal performance during aggressive driving.
In terms of off-road capability, the 2018 F-PACE has made significant improvements. Previously, only the top-tier models came with all-wheel drive. Now, every model except the base configuration is equipped with a four-wheel-drive system. This enhances both on-road and off-road capabilities.
During our off-road test, which covered about 6 kilometers of varied terrain including steep inclines and rocky sections, the F-PACE proved its mettle. Equipped with a full-road adaptive control system, it earned the nickname “idiot-proof off-road mode.†Simply set the desired speed between 3.6 and 30 km/h, hold the steering wheel steady, and let the driving computer take care of the rest. Whether it’s slippery, rough, steep, or icy, the system automatically adjusts the traction output to maintain control.
What makes this system so smart is its ability to distribute power between the front and rear wheels intelligently. In normal mode, the system leans towards rear-wheel drive, but in extreme situations, it can send up to 100% of the power to the front wheels, offering a wide range of adjustability.
Despite its many strengths, the F-PACE isn’t without flaws. Its commitment to speed and performance sometimes comes at the cost of ride comfort. Features like the panoramic sunroof, rear air conditioning, and electrically adjustable rear seats make it luxurious for passengers, but the overall comfort level might not suit everyone.
From another perspective, though, if it were overly comfortable, it wouldn’t be a Jaguar. Every choice has its trade-offs, and the F-PACE strikes a balance between performance and luxury. For drivers, it’s a dream machine that inspires passion. For passengers, it offers a blend of comfort and convenience, even if it doesn’t always prioritize smoothness over speed.
After spending time with the F-PACE, I can truly appreciate the finer traditions of the Jaguar lineage. From its all-aluminum body structure to its 50:50 front-to-rear weight distribution, every detail reflects the brand’s dedication to speed and precision. Whether you’re navigating winding mountain roads or cruising through city streets, the F-PACE delivers an unforgettable driving experience.
