The British style covers a wide range of areas, from fashion design to interior decoration. Many of the most iconic British brands stand out in their respective fields, especially in the automotive industry. Take the Jaguar brand, for instance, which carries forward the exceptional heritage of British engineering. Their deep understanding of automobiles and their pursuit of speed are truly inspiring.
Take a look at the 2018 Jaguar F-PACE. It emphasizes both on-road handling and off-road capabilities, offering a perfect blend of the Jaguar DNA. While it's undeniably attractive, there are still some areas where it could improve.
Last year, I had the chance to test drive the 2016 Jaguar F-PACE 3.0 SC four-wheel-drive S高性能 version. What left the deepest impression was its captivating exhaust note and impressive performance. It’s an SUV that can truly hold its own when it comes to control.
This time around, I’m testing the 2018 Jaguar F-PACE, a model that’s even closer to perfection. It now features Jaguar’s own Ingenium engine, a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine. No longer do we have to rely on Ford engines, which were previously used in over half a million vehicles.
Is 12.0T enough? Thanks to various advanced technologies, this new 2.0T engine from Jaguar is far more powerful than the previous Ford 2.0T. Not only does it produce 9 more horsepower and 25 N·m more torque, but the peak torque output has been significantly improved, dropping from 1750 rpm to 1300 rpm. This means the power is almost always ready to go.
This urban road test covered a variety of conditions, including mountain roads, national highways, and expressways. Within legal speed limits, there’s no need to worry about power shortages. Instead, what you should be concerned about is whether you can handle the car’s spirited performance.
Two perfect interpretations of the Jaguar gene
Why do you need to worry about control? Once you take the F-PACE onto a mountain road and switch to dynamic mode, you’ll feel like you’ve awakened a wild leopard. In S mode, the engine stays at high revs, delivering immediate acceleration under full throttle. The power output is robust, and after 5000 RPM, the engine and exhaust notes give off a V6-like feel.
Extensive use of aluminum front suspension and rear H-shaped composite multi-link systems ensures optimal weight distribution and control. The adaptive damping system analyzes up to 500 tire and steering inputs per 100 movements and 100 body dynamics per second, constantly adjusting the shocks. Coupled with the torque vectoring system for distributing power to each wheel, the car can maintain high cornering limits even during aggressive driving.
Three: More Emphasis on Off-Road Performance
The 2018 Jaguar F-PACE has seen significant upgrades in its off-road capabilities. Previously, only the top-tier models came with four-wheel drive. Now, every configuration except the base model is equipped with all-wheel drive, enhancing both on-road and off-road performance.
During our off-road test, we encountered a 6-kilometer-long track featuring various terrains, including large bumps and steep inclines. Despite the challenging conditions, the Jaguar F-PACE handled everything with ease thanks to its full-road adaptive control system, which I affectionately call the “fool-proof off-road mode.â€
Why is it called “fool-proof Because this system is incredibly intelligent. All you need to do is set your desired speed between 3.6 and 30 km/h, steer the wheel, and let the driving computer take over. Whether it’s slippery, rugged, steep, or icy, the system automatically adjusts the traction output to maintain control. With this, anyone can become an experienced driver in seconds.
The power distribution of the F-PACE’s four-wheel-drive system is unique. In normal mode, the rear-wheel drive is prioritized. However, in extreme situations, the front wheels can receive up to 100% of the power, providing a wide range of adjustability.
Four: Very Attractive, But Still Some Flaws
After spending some time with the F-PACE, I can truly appreciate the fine traditions of the Jaguar family. Besides the technical highlights mentioned above, there are other aspects like the all-aluminum body structure and a 50:50 front-to-rear weight balance, all emphasizing the pursuit of speed.
That winding mountain road, with its tight turns, fierce power, and roaring engine, still lingers in my mind. For someone passionate about driving, this is a great car. For passengers, there are plenty of comfort features, such as panoramic sunroofs, rear independent climate control, electric rear seat adjustments, and hands-free trunk opening. Yet, the ride comfort remains somewhat firm.
But let’s look at it from another perspective. If it’s too comfortable, it wouldn’t be a Jaguar. Everything has two sides, and so does the car. If it makes you fall in love with driving, what else matters?
