During the event, SAP announced its collaboration with the Beilun District People's Government to establish the “SiP Ningbo Smart Manufacturing Innovation Center.” This center aims to serve as a platform for building an Industry 4.0 innovation ecosystem, supporting local companies in their transition toward smart manufacturing. Chen Yujun, deputy secretary of the Ningbo Municipal Party Committee, highlighted that as China’s first pilot city for “Made in China 2025,” Ningbo is actively promoting intelligent transformation within enterprises, which has driven the modernization of its manufacturing sector. The establishment of the Innovation Center is expected to accelerate the development of a new industrial system in Ningbo, promote digitalization across the region, and support the construction of a model city for “Made in China 2025.” Gi Bengmeng, SAP’s executive vice president and president of Greater China, stated that Ningbo is a key manufacturing hub in China, with vibrant economic growth. He expressed hope that through collaboration with the municipal government, they can further boost smart innovation among local manufacturing companies. The “Sipu Ningbo Smart Manufacturing Innovation Center” is located in Beilun District. In the future, SAP will work with the Ningbo Economic and Technological Development Zone Holdings Co., Ltd. to use the center as a platform to incubate innovative results tailored to Ningbo’s needs, assisting local enterprises in their smart manufacturing upgrades. Additionally, the center will provide customized digital cloud services to SMEs, enabling them to achieve smart transformation and innovation. Since the 2008 financial crisis, global economic focus has shifted back to physical manufacturing from virtual sectors like finance and the internet. As the global manufacturing industry faces challenges such as low asset availability, poor data transparency, and rising labor costs, countries have introduced various strategies: the U.S. launched the “Industrial Internet,” Japan proposed an industrial rehabilitation plan, Germany introduced “Industry 4.0,” and China launched “Made in China 2025.” Experts view these initiatives as efforts to leverage emerging technologies like the Internet of Things to transform traditional manufacturing. In December 2016, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology released the “13th Five-Year Development Plan for Smart Manufacturing,” aiming to significantly enhance the foundation and support systems for smart manufacturing by 2020 and achieve initial intelligent transformation in key industries by 2025. Zhang Cheng, an analyst at Hua Cheng Securities, believes that smart manufacturing is the only path for China to become a global manufacturing leader. He emphasizes that “Made in China 2025” focuses on upgrading intelligence and informatization, not just automation. According to the development plan, smart manufacturing will be a key driver for future industrial transformation. Recent announcements by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology revealed 97 smart manufacturing pilot projects in 2017, with many located in coastal regions. Overall, the eastern coastal areas show more advanced levels of smart manufacturing. Experts predict that the next decade will be critical for China’s manufacturing upgrade, as improving user experience, customization, and cost efficiency become key goals. China is well-positioned for this transformation.
