I've always been eager to try new things, and this year I finally got the chance to experience Xiaomi's products. I had seen VR videos online before and used a basic version for watching movies. But what I really wanted was to play games and feel fully immersed in a virtual world. So, when I saw an opportunity to try out the official Xiaomi VR headset, especially since I own a Xiaomi 6, I decided to give it a shot.

The design is simple yet elegant, with a strong technical vibe that makes me feel like I'm holding something futuristic. The headset is designed as an open helmet, distributing the weight across the front and back of the head. One of my favorite features is the adjustable headband with a plastic card slot that helps extend its lifespan—very practical and well thought out. Unlike many other VR headsets on the market that use elastic bands, this one has cooling holes on the eyecups, which help reduce heat buildup and make the experience more comfortable during long sessions.
Another thoughtful feature is the calibration point on the lenses. If you're not sitting straight while watching a movie, the image can become blurry. With this calibration point, just a quick tap fixes the issue, making the experience much smoother. The soft sponge material on the lenses is very skin-friendly and comfortable to wear for extended periods—after half an hour, I still didn’t feel any discomfort. I wonder how it will hold up over time.
When I put the headset on, my phone automatically displays the content. If there’s nothing in front of the phone, it goes into standby mode to save battery. And when I take it off, the screen turns off automatically. This kind of smart interaction feels really convenient and user-friendly.
The controller has a touchpad and three buttons. The touchpad functions as a button for confirmation, and the Bluetooth connection works smoothly. The remote control uses a combination of touch, 9-axis motion tracking, and physical buttons, making it easy to navigate. It took me a little time to get used to the touch controls, but overall, it's intuitive and responsive. The left side has a return key and an application key, while the right side has the home button. The handle is lightweight and feels like regular plastic, but it's functional and easy to handle.
When it comes to the Xiaomi VR app, the setup is straightforward, and once inside, the immersive experience is pretty impressive. However, the video quality isn't perfect—it feels a bit grainy, possibly due to the smaller screen on the Xiaomi 6. This made the gaming experience a bit disappointing. For watching high-definition panoramic videos, the quality is also reduced. Additionally, the headset doesn’t have a headphone jack, so you have to rely on your phone’s speaker or a Bluetooth headset for audio. I hope the company will improve this in future versions.
Overall, the Xiaomi VR headset is a great step forward for immersive entertainment. Its design is sleek, and it offers a decent upgrade from just watching movies. While the gaming experience still needs improvement, especially in terms of graphics and software support, it’s still worth trying at its current price point. I believe it’s a promising product, and I look forward to seeing future updates and improvements from Xiaomi.
