Three strokes to solve Windows 10 browser no response

While using Windows 10, you may occasionally encounter issues where the Edge or Internet Explorer browser is completely unresponsive to network requests. This problem can be caused by various factors such as cache issues, problematic plugins, or interference from other software. Fortunately, these issues can often be resolved through a few troubleshooting steps.

1. Browser Suspension Caused by Cache

If you haven't used your browser for a long time, it might freeze or become unresponsive due to accumulated cache files. To fix this, follow these steps:

Right-click the Start button and choose "Control Panel." Switch the view to "Small Icons" and click on "Internet Options."

In the "Internet Options" window, go to the "General" tab and click the "Delete" button under the "Browsing History" section.

Select options like "Temporary Internet Files and Website Files," "Cookies and Website Data," and "History," then click "Delete" to clear them out.

After that, right-click the Start button again and open Command Prompt as an administrator. Run the command NETSH WINSOCK RESET to reset the network settings. This can help resolve deeper connectivity problems.

2. Flash Plugin Causing Browser Freezes

An outdated or malfunctioning Flash plugin can also cause browsers to hang. You can disable it in Internet Explorer by pressing Alt+X, going to "Tools > Security > ActiveX Filtering." This option is only available in IE.

Alternatively, go to the "Add-on Management" window via the "Tools" menu, find "Shockwave Flash Object," and disable it. This change will affect all browsers on your system.

You can also consider uninstalling Adobe Flash Player completely. Since the standard uninstaller isn't always visible in "Programs and Features," search online for the official Adobe Flash Uninstaller. After downloading, verify the file's details to ensure it's from Adobe. Once uninstalled, visit the Adobe website to install the latest version of Flash Player.

3. Conflicts with Third-Party Software

If the issue persists after fixing the cache and Flash problems, it could be due to conflicts with other software. To test this, boot into Safe Mode with Minimal Services:

Press Win + R, type MSCONFIG, and open the System Configuration utility. Go to the "Services" tab, check "Hide all Microsoft services," and click "Disable All." Then switch to the "Startup" tab, open Task Manager, and disable all startup items. Restart your computer.

If the browser works normally in Safe Mode, re-enable applications one by one to identify the conflicting software. Once found, uninstall it to resolve the issue.

By following these steps, you should be able to restore normal browser functionality and improve overall system stability.
