Using and maintaining a voltmeter is similar to using and maintaining an ammeter. However, there are some specific points to keep in mind:

1. When measuring voltage, the voltmeter must be connected in parallel with the circuit being tested. This ensures accurate readings without affecting the circuit's operation.

2. Since the voltmeter is connected in parallel with the load, its internal resistance (Rv) should be significantly higher than the load resistance (RL). This prevents the voltmeter from drawing too much current and altering the circuit’s behavior.

3. When measuring direct current (DC), always connect the negative terminal ("—") of the voltmeter to the low potential end of the circuit first, then connect the positive terminal ("+") to the high potential end. This helps avoid incorrect readings or damage to the device.

4. For multi-range voltmeters, if you need to change the measurement range, it's essential to disconnect the voltmeter from the circuit before adjusting the range. This prevents sudden changes in current that could affect accuracy or damage the meter.

Additionally, always ensure the voltmeter is properly calibrated and stored in a dry, cool place when not in use. Regular maintenance and checking for wear or damage can extend the life of the instrument and improve measurement reliability.
