While face recognition and AR expressions are already impressive, developers at Kite & Lightning are taking things a step further by turning the iPhone X into a "low-cost and fast" facial motion capture tool for VR game development. Recently, they released an intriguing experiment video showcasing this concept.
The video, created by Kite & Lightning developer Cory Strassburger, uses a character from *Bebylon Battle Royale* to demonstrate how the iPhone X can capture facial movements. Through a series of expressive exercises and even a strong New York accent, Strassburger highlights the system’s ability to track subtle facial expressions in real time.
Currently, this is just an early prototype, as Strassburger notes that while the iPhone X can achieve smooth facial deformation at 60fps with tracking of 52 facial landmarks, there's still a long way to go before reaching the full potential of the data quality. He plans to refine the system further, focusing on eye tracking, resolving issues like head jitter caused by flicker, and improving the blend shapes to better suit this setup. Additionally, he aims to add visual character adjustments and the ability to record and export captured data.
One of his most exciting ideas is developing a harness system that can mount the iPhone X inside a VR helmet, allowing it to capture both facial and body movements when paired with a motion capture kit. This could open up new possibilities for indie developers looking to create immersive VR experiences without expensive equipment.
