For the iPhone X, equipped with a 7-megapixel front-facing camera, face recognition capabilities have opened up some truly impressive possibilities. From unlocking your phone to rendering AR expressions, these features are already pretty cool. But developers at Kite & Lightning are taking it a step further, aiming to turn the iPhone X into a "cost-effective and fast" facial motion capture tool for VR game development. Recently, they released an intriguing experiment video showcasing this potential.
Created by Kite & Lightning developer Cory Strassburger, the video features a character from *Bebylon Battle Royale* to demonstrate how the iPhone X can capture facial movements. Through a series of expressive exercises and even a strong New York accent, Strassburger highlighted the system's ability to track and replicate detailed facial expressions in real time.
This is still just an early test, according to Strassburger. While the iPhone X can achieve a high frame rate of 60fps and track 52 different facial muscle groups, he notes that there’s still a lot of work to be done before reaching the full potential of the captured data. “There’s a long way to go before I hit the quality limit,†he said.
Looking ahead, Strassburger plans to integrate proper eye tracking, investigate the cause of head flicker, refine the mix to better suit the setup, add visual character adjustment tools, and include recording features. His ultimate goal is to create a harness system that can mount the iPhone inside a VR helmet, allowing for both facial and body movement tracking—using a motion capture kit to enhance the experience.
*Bebylon Battle Royale* is a multiplayer arena game set to launch on Steam in 2018, supporting both Oculus Rift and HTC Vive. With its unique and bizarre style, the game has already generated a lot of excitement among VR enthusiasts. Ying Wei Wang is particularly eager to see what surprises the developers have in store, as the title continues to stand out as one of the most unconventional VR experiences available.
