As of September 30, Magyar Telekom, the leading Hungarian telecom operator, has seen impressive growth in its TV business within the domestic market, surpassing one million subscribers. The company reported a total of 1,016,192 users by the end of the third quarter, marking a 3.8% year-over-year increase. This growth was accompanied by strong financial performance, with TV revenue reaching 105.44 billion Hungarian Forints (approximately 33.8 million Euros) during the quarter—a 9.3% rise compared to the same period last year. The average revenue per user (ARPU) for the TV business also increased by 5.4%, reaching 3,479 Hungarian Forints.
The improvement in ARPU can be attributed to price adjustments made in January this year for the new TV service portfolio launched in November 2016. These changes have helped boost profitability and customer value. In Macedonia, Magyar Telekom's subsidiary saw a 7% increase in TV users, reaching 114,205 as of September 30. Revenue from TV services in the region rose by 12.2% to 858 million Hungarian Forints.
Overall, Magyar Telekom’s Q3 revenue totaled 155,381 million Hungarian Forints, an 8.8% increase from the previous year. EBITDA reached 57.212 billion Forints, up 12.1%, while net profit climbed to 19.431 billion Forints, a significant 56.3% increase year-on-year.
In his quarterly review, CEO Christopher Mattheisen highlighted the company’s strategic moves to enhance broadband offerings. By increasing download speeds and re-evaluating fixed-line products, Magyar Telekom has seen positive early results, with over 80,000 customers signing up for new packages—many opting for 100 Mbps speeds.
Additionally, the company expanded the functionality of Magenta 1, its flagship 4-in-1 service, allowing seamless data switching between fixed and mobile networks. This update reinforces the company’s focus on FMC (Fixed Mobile Convergence) users, which currently make up 11% of the total home user base. As the only integrated provider in Hungary, Magyar Telekom continues to play a key role in meeting the communication needs of families, helping to maximize telecom consumption within households.
Despite challenges in the Macedonian market, including rising price pressures and competition, the company maintained a 4% year-over-year increase in EBITDA, driven by growing user numbers and operational efficiency. Mattheisen confirmed that the company’s 2017 goals remain unchanged, reflecting confidence in its long-term strategy and market position.
