US Energy Conservation Campaign: Analysis of Power Electronics Technology Roles

The world’s attention to energy consumption is increasing. As two ways to reduce energy consumption, energy conservation requires personal self-awareness and social decision-making, and energy efficiency improvement is purely a technical issue. 3% of the electrical energy used in the United States is dissipated as heat during the electronic power supply | voltage regulator | regulator conversion process. So the power electronics industry, including semiconductor companies, power companies and end product manufacturers, is working to cut these losses in half. The way they use it is to increase power conversion efficiency and reduce standby power consumption in high-volume consumer electronics. Of course, reducing these losses is not the ultimate goal, and achieving higher system performance and lower cost is the real goal.

Today, the annual carbon emissions in the United States is 2.75 billion tons. If you continue the current trajectory, it will increase by more than 40% by 2050. A major source of this emissions is the electricity used in baking and cooking systems, lighting, appliances and electronics. Power electronics engineers can play an important role in protecting the planet's valuable resources. Below is a brief analysis.

1. 6% to 10% of all power applications in the United States are in the conversion of power from alternating current (AC) to direct current (DC).

2. Due to the poor power efficiency of the existing power supply, 3% to 4% of all power consumption in the United States is consumed inside the power supply.

3, with better design, using the latest electronic components such as IC controllers, FETs and diodes to increase the efficiency of the power supply, can save 1% to 2% of all power consumption in the United States, that is, 30 per year ~ 6 billion US dollars in savings potential.

The total annual residential electrical energy consumption in the United States is 1.3 trillion kWh.

Commercial electricity section

The annual commercial power consumption in the United States is 1,230 billion kWh, of which 9% (110.7 billion kWh) comes from office equipment. Assume that office equipment's power consumption can be reduced by 15%, potential power savings of 16.6 billion kWh, and $0.10/kWh, which is close to $1.7 billion.

Add the savings potential of different parts

For the United States, if you increase the power efficiency of common electronic products, you can save up to $4.9 billion in electricity costs by combining residential and commercial power. The savings from more efficient product work pattern design can also generate more benefits.

How is power lost, what measures are taken for power loss?

In electronic equipment, power loss is divided into two parts, namely standby loss and operating loss. Standby loss occurs when the device (computer, battery charger, TV, etc.) is turned off, when the device is still consuming power; and the operating loss is caused by the inefficiency of the power conversion phase, which is usually in the power supply. In home applications, standby loss is expected to account for 25% of total loss, while operating losses account for the remaining 75%.

In recent years, much of the work has been done to increase public interest in electricity savings, and governments around the world have initiated many voluntary and mandatory programs to promote the design of more efficient products and to make better use of electricity. One of the most successful examples in the United States is ENERGY STAR, a voluntary program that promotes more efficient products and encourages consumers to purchase them. The basic approach to the ENERGY STAR program is to investigate existing products and set a threshold for a product to meet the ENERGYSTAR label.

this LED light has SMD LED with an output of 5,500 lumens. Natural white LED have a 4700K color temperature and emit a wide 180° beam angle. This powerful, energy-efficient LED light fixture uses just 50 watts of power-significantly less than the 128 watts that would be consumed by a metal-halide (MH) fixture. And with a life expectancy of 50,000 hours-5 times as long as fluorescent or MH fixtures-the LED light reduces costly repairs, disposal fees and the need for replacements. A vapor-proof, weatherproof aluminum housing and frosted polycarbonate lens are dust tight as well as water and impact resistant for use in harsh environments.
