TV shows great progress but the system is still difficult to use

Last Thursday, my 50-inch Pioneer plasma TV that I had used for many years suddenly died. I have been using this TV for nearly a decade and when it was purchased I was called the best TV on the market. I clearly remember that it was Jobs who personally recommended me to buy this TV, but at that time, the price of $5,000 was beyond my budget.

However, in the past ten years, I did not regret that although it only has two HDMI interfaces, and can not fully show the 1080P effect, but only 1080i, but plasma TVs do have a very top-level experience in terms of black levels and colors.

So I had to start looking for a new TV, but whether it is a pioneer or a plasma TV, it has already withdrawn from the TV market. Plasma TVs on the market can be even more tricky. So even if I'm a professional tech critic, it's not easy to pick a TV.

There are many factors to consider when choosing a TV that is satisfactory. It involves a lot of personal preferences, image quality, design, and even a remote control. More detailed settings and operations require detailed experience after we go home. Generally speaking, after we buy a new laptop or a new mobile phone, the first thing to go home is to spend a lot of time and energy, setting it to its most satisfactory configuration and status, regardless of brand or operating system. But television shouldn't be too much trouble for us.

I don’t have much patience for choosing what kind of big-screen TVs. At the annual CES, I have seen a variety of new products. Actually, I don’t know who is better. So I basically don't have much testing for what curved screen, 3D, and various UHD concepts.

So I asked a lot of friends for advice. Most people recommended Samsung and Sony. Of course, there are people who recommend Vizio from a low price point of view. However, no one seems to recommend LG's OLED TV to me. It should be noted that many Android flagship models now use OLED screens, and LG's OLED TVs are the same, but the price is much higher.

The next day, I took my son to Best Buy, but he, like me, knew nothing about TV.

In the store, two salespersons warmly welcomed us, but they seem to have little understanding of television, but for more expensive products, it seems that I recommend buying more. In the store, I experienced some menus for streaming media applications, and the sales staff also told me that because the sound effects of the TV are not outstanding, I even suggested that I buy an expensive sound bar.

Finally, we finally chose a 55-inch LG B-series OLED TV, which was thinner and lighter. The frame was narrower than my previous 50-inch Pioneer plasma TV, and the price was only half of the year. Like all competitors, this TV has a 4K resolution, smart remote control and two HDMI interfaces. In addition, it also built streaming media applications such as Netflix and Hulu. And the WebOS system provided a cartoon image named Bean Bird that helped me complete the setup and operation of the WebOS interface. That's right. The WebOS system that used to appear on Palm phones has changed beyond recognition. I almost can't recognize it.

The biggest advantage of OLED TVs is that they do not require a backlight, so the display in black areas is even better. In the store, the OLED TV has many other brands compared to the TV, the black looks really black, and it is like my previous plasma TV. The brightness is also good, and the viewing angle is also very wide.

After a few days of use, my wife was very satisfied with this LG TV and even started to watch various streaming shows through Netflix. But learning to operate a television system is a completely different story. In WebOS systems, including volume adjustment, photo zooming, and use of a built-in Web browser, all require a more complex process to be implemented. We must do this through a large number of menu options.

In addition, there are some features that are controversial, and the user interface is also a bit confusing to operate, and give me such a feeling in at least three ways. First of all, changing the input method requires at least two pop-up menus to complete, and launching an application like Netflix requires the search in the bottom N icons to open it. If you want to start quickly, you have to do a good job of editing and put your favorite apps in front of you.

I was generally satisfied with LG's menu organization and adjustment design. It was a lot stronger than my previous Pioneer TV, but it was still a bit tricky to implement.

Another example is LG's Magic Remote. It's cool and it allows me to swing my arm and control the big cursor on the screen. You need to press the button on the remote control before using it. At the same time, you can use the scroll wheel to control the cursor on the screen and quickly switch the channel list.

But sometimes this remote control is not so magical, for example it should have "universal" properties that can also control other set-top box products. However, not all third-party set-top boxes actually use LG's remote control. In addition, its voice search function is very poor, not worse than Apple TV. For example, after I say “Arrested Development”, I often identify it as “Rest Development”.

Sony, when I want to use TiVo and Apple TV, I have to use the same remote control as before.

Actually, I don't regret buying this LG OLED TV. With it, I don't even need to buy built-in video services like Roku and Amazon Prime, but overall, the TV system is still very troublesome to use. Although LG's WebOS system looks promising, it is still difficult to use compared to the price of 2,800 US dollars.
